Botanical tour

Dear visitor, welcome to the botanical tour of the Campus Berlin-Buch. On this approximately one-hour walk, we present a selection of trees, shrubs and herbs that are either special because of their rarity, are used in traditional remedy or medicine, or are reminders of the history of the campus as a cemetery and tree nursery.

The tour starts at the gatehouse and ends at the exit Lindenberger Weg. The dashed line on the plan shows you the shortest way back to the gatehouse from there.

1 Robinia

Behind the gatehouse, in a group of three trees, there is a robinia, also called false acacia. It is recognizable by its longitudinally deeply furrowed bark.

2 Yew tree

In front of the crossing, on the right side of the path, there is an evergreen shrub, a european yew.

3 Douglas fir

At the intersection, a few meters to the right is a blue douglas fir, towering, the trunk straight with black-brown bark, the crown relatively slender.

4 Wildflower meadow

After a few meters there is a wildflower meadow on the right of the path on a grassy traffic island.

5 Japanese Pagoda tree

Return to the main path and walk toward the Transparent Laboratory. In front of it, to the right of the path, is a tree with a Y-shaped trunk, a japanese pagoda tree.

6 Flowering Crab Apple

To the right of the entrance to the library is a tree about six meters high, its trunk entwined with ivy. A flowering crab apple.

7 European smoketree

In the forecourt of the entrance to the library, on the left and on the right, there are two shrubs about three meters high, european smoketrees.

8 Japanese maple

To the left of the entrance to the library is a tree about six meters high with smooth bark and five-fingered leaves that turn fiery red in the fall: a japanese maple.

9 Eastern Hemlock

At the passageway between the library and the Transparent Laboratory, on the left, is a coniferous tree with ivy growing around its trunk. Eastern hemlock.

10 Paper birch

A little further along the path, to the right of the stairs, is a group of four birches whose trunks are remarkably smooth and white. They are paper birches.

11 Bee-bee tree

Up the stairs and to the left, behind the ping-pong table and to the left of the benches, is a small tree about ten meters tall with rust-red inflorescences in summer: a bee-bee tree.

12 Common laburnum

To the right of the benches is a shrub six meters high with several trunks. Between April and June, its profuse flowers show why it is called golden chain.

13 Thorny locust

In front of the main entrance to the Mensa is a tree whose trunk and branches bear long thorns. A thorny locust.

14 Common hazel

In the meadow in front of the Mensa, there is a shrub about seven meters tall with many trunks. A common hazel.

15 Pillar oak

The path in front of the Mensa is flanked opposite the wooded area by a group of pillar oaks, recognizable by their longitudinally cracked bark and characteristically lobed leaves.

16 Western red cedar

Across the intersection from the main trail, on the left, is a towering evergreen tree with branches reaching the ground. A western red cedar.

17 Blue spruce

At the next intersection is a small group of towering evergreen trees whose bluish needles give them their name: Blue Spruces.

18 Medicinal herb beds

The path to the foyer of the Leibniz Research Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP) is flanked by eight beds in which various medicinal herbs and plants thrive.

19 Horse chestnut

In front of the rear entrance of the red Max Delbrück Communications Center, a horse chestnut tree towers over the building, recognizable by its characteristic pinnate leaves.

20 Ginkgo

In front of the main entrance of the Walter-Friedrich-Haus, a single tree stands on a leafy traffic island. A ginkgo, also called maidenhair tree.

21 Wildflower meadow

In front of the main entrance of the Walter-Friedrich-Haus there is a wildflower meadow on a grassed traffic island.

22 Tulip tree

In the direction of Lindenberger Weg, after the wooded area on the left side in front of the building, there is a tree with a slender trunk. It is an american tulip tree.

23 Black pine

In the meadow next to the Oskar and Cécile Vogt House, a group of conifers with dark gray bark on their trunks towers high. They are black pines.

24 Wildflower meadow

Next to the high-field MR (MRI) research building, the decommissioned magnetic coil of an MRI stands on the lawn. In front of it there is a wild flower meadow.
